POLICIES + SAFETY RULES

Before using any of the tools or equipment in the Maker Space, it is important to understand the safety rules and guidelines. We prioritize the safety of our members, and we require that all users understand these policies before accessing the space.

1. Always wear appropriate attire when using the Maker Space. We recommend wearing closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from falling objects, sharp edges, or heat. Tie long hair back and avoid loose clothing, especially clothing with long sleeves, scarves, or other features that could accidentally get caught in a machine.

2. Gloves are REQUIRED when using heavy-duty adhesives. All other PPE is optional. There are earplugs available for laser cutter operation, but they are not required. Goggles and dust masks are available if you would like to use them while doing light sanding and finishing, but they are not required.

3. Never use a tool or piece of equipment unless you have been trained and authorized to do so. Proper training is required before using any tool or equipment, as improper use can result in damage or serious injury. Only use tools or equipment that you have been authorized to use to avoid potential risks. Failure to obtain proper certification before using a machine may lead to liability for any damages caused and may also result in the revocation of your access to the maker space.

4. Keep the workspace clean and free of clutter to avoid tripping hazards. Cluttered workspaces can be dangerous, as they can lead to tripping hazards that may result in injuries. Keep your workspace clean and organized, and put away any tools or equipment that are not in use. This will help prevent accidents and make it easier for everyone to find the tools and equipment they need.

5. Report any accidents, injuries, or equipment malfunctions immediately to a staff member. If you experience an accident, injury, or equipment malfunction while working, it's important to report it immediately to a staff member. This will ensure that any necessary repairs or maintenance are performed on the equipment in question, and that you receive appropriate medical attention if needed. Reporting accidents and injuries can also help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

6. Do not use any equipment that is damaged or not functioning properly. Using damaged or malfunctioning equipment can be extremely dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. If you notice that a tool or piece of equipment is damaged or not functioning properly, report it to a staff member immediately. In the meantime, do not attempt to use the equipment until it has been repaired or replaced.

7. Do not use any tools or equipment while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Using tools or equipment while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is extremely dangerous, as it can impair your judgment and reaction time. This can lead to accidents and injuries, both for yourself and others around you. Avoid using any tools or equipment while under the influence, and if you are taking medication that may affect your ability to operate machinery, consult with a staff member before using any tools or equipment.

8. Always follow the specific safety guidelines for each tool and piece of equipment you are using. Each tool and piece of equipment comes with its own set of safety guidelines that must be followed to ensure safe and proper use. 9. Never use the Maker Space tools to create weapons or dangerous items, as this is against Maker Space policy. Maker Space is a place for innovation and creativity, but it's important to remember that safety always comes first. Creating weapons or dangerous items is not only against our policy, but it can also put you and others in danger.

10. Do not use anything that will leave dust, residue, noxious smells or fumes for other residents. We want to ensure that everyone is comfortable and safe in our Maker Space. Use alternative materials that are less likely to produce strong odors.

11. Use caution at all times when using sharp objects, hot objects, machines, etc. Be aware of your surroundings and use caution when working with anything that could potentially cause harm. Pay attention to what you're doing, and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.

12. Use of the space is at your own risk. While we take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our Maker Space users, it's important to remember that accidents and injuries can still happen. By using the space, you acknowledge that you are doing so at your own risk and assume all responsibility for your own safety.
